About Seth Mason — Atlanta Spanish Tutor

¡Mucho gusto!

I’m a bilingual Spanish-language professional and American expat who has spent more than three decades studying and teaching Spanish in both academic and real-world settings. Spanish has played a major role in my life, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to teach it.

My background in Spanish began in eighth grade, when I first started studying the language academically. I later earned a degree in Spanish in 2001 and went on to build a professional career working with Spanish-speaking communities throughout the Southeastern United States and Latin America.

My experience living in Latin America began in 1998, when I studied abroad in Mérida, Venezuela. That experience deepened my understanding of the Spanish language and Latin American culture and served as a foundation for a career using Spanish. From there, I launched a Spanish-language newspaper, consulted for companies that wanted to target the U.S. Hispanic market, and launched a Spanish teaching business.

Since 2017, I’ve been living most of the year in Medellín, Colombia, where I remain immersed in Spanish language and Latin American culture while continuing to teach students in Metro Atlanta and beyond.

Academic and Professional Spanish Background

My academic background includes Bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and International Business from the College of Charleston and an M.B.A. from the University of Georgia.

Studying Spanish at the university level gave me a deep understanding of the structure of the language, including grammar, syntax, and linguistic nuance. That academic foundation allows me to explain clearly not only what is correct in Spanish, but also why the language works the way it does.

The combination of academic training and real-world language use allows me to help students develop both accuracy and fluency.

Living and Speaking Spanish in Latin America

Spending extended time in Latin America has played a major role in my development as a Spanish speaker and teacher.

Living in Spanish-speaking environments requires a level of fluency and nuance that goes well beyond classroom learning: It involves navigating everyday life, building relationships, and communicating naturally in real-world situations.

I’ve been traveling to Latin America since 1998, and Medellín, Colombia has been my home for much of the year since 2017. Living in Latin America allows me to remain fully immersed in Spanish while continuing to teach students in Atlanta through online lessons.

This ongoing immersion helps ensure that the Spanish I teach reflects the way the language is being used in real-world professional and personal contexts.

Teaching Spanish to Adults

Since 2015, I’ve focused on teaching private Spanish lessons to adults.

Raised by a family of educators, teaching is in my genes. Over the years, I’ve refined a unique teaching methodology designed specifically for adult learners based on their motivations for learning Spanish as well as their learning styles. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s goals and focuses heavily on the areas where the student needs the most improvement.

Many of my students learn Spanish for professional communication. Others want to speak comfortably while living abroad or traveling throughout Latin America or Spain. Some simply enjoy the intellectual challenge of learning a new language.

What they all share is the goal of becoming fluent, confident Spanish speakers while learning Spanish as native English speakers.

Because I learned Spanish as an English speaker myself, I understand the challenges that English speakers encounter when learning Spanish and how to best overcome them.

Private Spanish Lessons for Adults in Atlanta

Today, I work with adults across Metro Atlanta and beyond, providing private, individualized Spanish lessons online.

Students choose to learn from me because they want a structured, personalized approach to learning Spanish and a teacher who combines academic knowledge with decades of real-world experience using the language in professional and personal settings.

My goal is always the same: helping students become fluent, confident Spanish speakers who can communicate naturally in real-world situations.
